Historic hotels in the West Loop & Fulton Market

Just west of downtown, the West Loop and its Fulton Market heart grew up around the city’s meatpacking and food-wholesale trade. In recent years the district’s brick warehouses have been transformed into some of Chicago’s most celebrated restaurants, offices, and design-forward hotels, while keeping their industrial bones.

It is a quick walk or ride from the Loop, and a destination in its own right for food and nightlife.

All three are conversions, and each kept something. Soho House is in a 1908 leather-belting works; its rooftop water tower was taken down plank by plank and turned into the mural in the lobby, and there is an eighty-foot pool on the roof. The Publishing House has had four lives — a Methodist publishing house, a casket factory, a holograph museum, and now an eleven-room bed and breakfast in the MICHELIN Guide.
