Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about this guide — how we choose the hotels, how booking works, and how your stay helps preserve historic Chicago.

Chicago Historic Hotels is a curated, nonprofit guide to the city’s most architecturally and historically significant places to stay.

What makes a hotel “historic” enough to be featured here?

Every hotel in this guide is selected by Preservation Chicago for its architectural and historical significance. They range from grand hotels built during Chicago’s golden age to early skyscrapers, banks, and clubs that have been given a second life as places to stay. Many occupy buildings that are designated Chicago Landmarks or listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Who chooses the hotels, and is placement paid for?

The hotels are researched and recommended by the team at Preservation Chicago, a nonprofit preservation advocacy organization. Hotels cannot pay to be listed — selection is based on a building’s significance and authenticity, not on advertising. You can read more about how we choose them on our Our purpose page.

How do I book a room?

Each hotel page has a “Check availability” button that takes you to our booking partner, where you can see live rates and reserve a room. We don’t process reservations ourselves — your booking is made directly with the partner or the hotel.

Does booking through this site cost more?

No. You pay the same rate you would otherwise. If you book through our links, our booking partner may share a small commission with Preservation Chicago at no additional cost to you — and that support goes directly toward preserving Chicago’s historic buildings.

Is this an official website for these hotels?

No. Chicago Historic Hotels is an independent, nonprofit guide published by Preservation Chicago. It is not operated by or officially affiliated with the individual hotels, and rates and policies are set by the hotels themselves.

Can I visit these historic buildings if I’m not staying overnight?

Often, yes. Many of these hotels welcome the public into their lobbies, bars, and restaurants, which are among the best-preserved historic interiors in the city. Hours and access vary, so it’s best to check with each hotel directly.

How current are the prices and details shown?

Prices are indicative starting rates and can change frequently with demand and season. Always confirm current availability and the exact rate with the booking partner before you reserve. Other details may also change over time.
