Daniel H. Burnham (1846–1912) shaped the look of modern Chicago as much as any architect. With his partner John Wellborn Root he led Burnham & Root, the firm behind pioneering early skyscrapers such as the Reliance and the Rookery; after Root’s death the practice continued as D. H. Burnham & Company, which produced a string of monumental Loop office buildings.
Burnham also directed the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition and co-authored the visionary 1909 Plan of Chicago — the source of his famous charge to ‘make no little plans.’ Several buildings from his firms now welcome overnight guests.
