Why this building matters

Bridgeport is among the most historic corners of Chicago: a working-class river neighborhood that grew up beside the old Union Stock Yards and the I&M Canal, gave the city five mayors, and has reinvented itself today as a lively arts district anchored by the Zhou B Art Center. The Polo Inn brings boutique character to this storied South Side setting, a short hop from Guaranteed Rate Field and downtown. The inn itself is woven into that local history. Its corner building once held a neighborhood candy store — now the restaurant’s dining room — and a small movie theater, today the wood-paneled Old Eagle Room banquet hall. The family-run Polo Café has anchored the corner for some forty years, and the three-suite bed-and-breakfast opened upstairs in 2008.
