Why this building matters
The hotel occupies a limestone building completed in 1893 at the corner of Clark and Wrightwood — a fine example of German Renaissance Revival, with projecting bays and stepped gables. It was built for Mathias Steffen (1849–1933), a Luxembourg immigrant whose firm M. Steffen & Co. made and shipped vinegar and pickles; after 1911 it passed through decades as an apartment-hotel and then a rooming house known as the Wrightwood Hotel. Today it is a small, keyless, self-check-in property of fourteen apartment-style suites — full kitchens, in-unit laundry, and the original banister and staircase preserved — a calm base within walking distance of Lincoln Park Zoo and the lakefront.
