Why this building matters
The building at 2001–2003 N. California dates to 1896, designed by architect Charles Thisslew — a genuine piece of 19th-century Logan Square. The single-room-occupancy hotel it now houses revives an old and increasingly rare Chicago lodging type: modest private rooms at a price ordinary travelers can afford. After a multi-year rehabilitation, two locals reopened it in 2024 as a clean, design-minded SRO, a way to experience one of the city’s most creative neighborhoods from within its historic fabric.
